How can I prevent corns and calluses?

Since corns and calluses are caused by friction and pressure over time on particular areas of your feet, the best way to prevent them is to reduce or eliminate that pressure. Wearing shoes that fit correctly and support your feet well is one of the best ways to do this. Avoid styles that are too tight or too narrow. Skip high heels and other shoes that put abnormal pressure on areas of your lower limbs. If certain parts of your feet are susceptible to pressure, wear protective pads or consider orthotics to offer better support and cushioning.

Take care of your skin as well. Keep your feet clean and moisturized. Use softening creams or pumice stones on thickened, rough patches of skin. Wear comfortable, fitted socks that wick excess moisture away from your skin, too. If you do develop these lesions, let Dr. Jyotsna Thepar of Ankle & Foot Specialist of N.J. help you figure out why and eliminate them.
